Who We Are
The Worcester County Information Technology Department has grown and adapted since its establishment in 1992. Originally housed within the Finance Office under the County Treasurer, the division transitioned to Emergency Services in 2010 before becoming a standalone department in October 2018.
Today, our department is dedicated to developing, securing, and supporting the County’s information and communication systems. We maintain the County’s digital infrastructure—including data storage, network connectivity, internet access, and phone systems—across all agencies.
Cybersecurity is a top priority. We implement robust access controls, monitor systems for threats, and safeguard sensitive information to ensure the integrity and protection of County data. Our team also manages user authentication and secure access to internal systems, helping prevent unauthorized entry and data breaches.
Additionally, we oversee the design, development, and administration of County websites, ensuring they are accessible, secure, and informative for the public.
We also maintain critical access to state-run databases like the Maryland Interagency Law Enforcement System (MILES) and the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS), enhancing communication and collaboration between local and state law enforcement agencies.
Document Imaging
As of 2024 the Document Imaging Department is a branch of the Information Technology Department. In 2005, Worcester County Document Imaging department was created with the mission of efficiently and accurately converting paper documents into digital format for easy access, storage, and retrieval by Worcester County department employees. By utilizing advanced technologies like optical character recognition (OCR) and high-speed scanners, Document Imaging employs 5 full-time and 3 part-time employees to provide reliable, accurate and efficient digital imaging services to all county departments. The Document Imaging department continually strives for improvement of digital storage practices and innovation to obtain the goal of paper elimination in day to day county operations while maintaining digital document storage priorities.
Geographic Information System (GIS)
Worcester County’s GIS is currently housed in the Department of Comprehensive Planning. The GIS began as a regional effort in May 1997 between the Worcester County Commissioners, Assateague Island National Seashore, Maryland Coastal Bays Program and Maryland Department of Natural Resources to support the activities of the regional GIS. In November 2004, Worcester County decided fulltime GIS support was needed to meet the growing demand of GIS in the county system. Today, GIS supports a wide variety of government functions including emergency services, water and sewer projects, comprehensive planning, watershed planning, development review proposals, public works projects, and more. As of June 2026 the GIS team is incorporated into the Information Technology department.
