Commissioners recognize Public Health Week

March 15, 2016, the Commissioners present a proclamation to Health Department Acting Prevention Director Mimi Dean recognizing the week of April 4-10 as Public Health Week in Worcester County and commending Health Department officials for providing quality medical care and meeting the health needs in the community. During Public Health Week the Worcester County Health Department will host its annual Tortoise and Hare Dare Walk/Run in Pocomoke on April 2 and host the annual Public Health Week Conference “Public Health: Working for Worcester” in Ocean City on April 6.

Spring Outdoor Youth Soccer Returns for another Spring Season

            Spring is just around the corner and that means it's time for spring soccer. Worcester County Recreation & Parks (WCRP) will kick off the Spring Outdoor Soccer League on Sunday, April 3.  

            The league is open to children ages 3 through grade 8. Players will be divided into five, co-ed age divisions (Age 3-4, grades K-1, grades 2-3, grades 4-5, and grades 6-8). The league runs Sunday afternoons at John Walter Smith Park in Snow Hill. Teams from each town will be formed. The registration deadline is Thursday, March 31.

Worcester County Recreation & Parks offers Adult Flag Football League

Worcester County Recreation & Parks is offering a cure for all those diehards going through football withdrawal. Sign up for WCRP’s competitive Adult Flag Football league this spring, which runs on Wednesdays, from April 6 – June 8, 2016. 

The league is open to those ages 18 and up, and it is not for the faint of heart. The league will consist of eight weeks of games plus playoffs. League play will be 8 v 8, and teams may have up to 15 players on a roster. Scores and standings will be kept throughout the season. 

Tourism Officials call for 2016 Worcester Green nominations

Worcester County Tourism is accepting nominations through April 8, 2016 for the 5th annual Worcester Green Awards. Worcester Green celebrates excellence in promoting environmentally friendly practices, strategies and products.

“Our county is fortunate to have so many who are dedicated to cultivating a more sustainable tomorrow by instituting best practices today,” Worcester County Tourism Director Lisa Challenger said.

Public Service Commission Public Hearing - Stephen Decatur Middle School - Sandpiper Energy Inc. Rate Increase


A public hearing for comment will be held on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 6:30 pm in the matter of Sandpiper Energy Inc.’s application to increase its natural gas and propane rates by $948,000. The application has been docketed by the Maryland Public Service Commission as Case No. 9410. Case filings and associated pleadings in the matter are available in the electronic docket file (9410) which may be viewed or downloaded at www.psc.state.md.us.

Worcester County Economic Development Accepting Applications for STEM Internship, Leadership, and Camp Programs

Worcester County Economic Development (WCED) is accepting applications from Worcester students ages 12-22 for 2016 STEM Summer Programs, which provide exceptional opportunities to explore career paths in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Online applications will be available at www.chooseworcester.org/STEM beginning March 1 and are due no later than March 31.  

Worcester County flag flies at half-mast outside the Government Center in Snow Hill

The Worcester County flag flies at half-mast outside the Government Center in Snow Hill this morning to honor Public Works Roads Worker Scott Tatterson who was struck by a vehicle and killed while working in the area of Greenbackville Road in Stockton Monday, February 22. Our thoughts and prayers are with Wade Pusey who was also struck and is under active medical care. Scott and Wade are valuable and valued members of our Worcester County family, and our hearts are broken in light of the tragedy that befell our family yesterday.
