Mosquito Control

This program is responsible for administering and implementing mosquito control services throughout the County. Mosquitoes are vectors of disease, noxious pests which decrease the quality of life and can depress real estate value and local economies based on outdoor tourism. The County, along with the Maryland State Department of Agriculture has a cooperative mosquito control program. Program activities include mosquito-borne disease surveillance, mosquito surveillance, biological control, ground and aerial application of insecticides, source reduction and public education.
It is the policy of the County Commissioners that groups of homeowners may apply for and receive adult mosquito control spraying services as a part of the program. In order to qualify as a spray area, there must be at least seven participating homes along three miles of contiguous road frontage and there must be sufficient public or adequate private road access to adequately serve the area. The residents in the area must all request the service in writing and members of the group agree to be responsible for such portion of the cost of spraying as determined by the Commissioners. Each community group shall enter into a written, signed agreement providing for spraying and payment to the County and further indicate and select a responsible person who shall collect sufficient funds from the members of the group.
It is the mission of the mosquito control program to prevent mosquito-borne disease in humans and domestic animals and to reduce mosquito populations to an acceptable level.
