Cold Weather Season Means Customers Should Review Plans, Check Supplies
SALISBURY, Md. – Since the winter season is fast approaching, Delmarva Power and the American Red Cross of Delmarva held a joint news conference today in Salisbury, Md., to remind the public that it’s time to prepare for the possibility that harsh weather could hit the region any time over the next few months.
“The National Weather Service warns that warmer than normal ocean surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific will result in an above-average number of winter storms that will affect the mid-Atlantic region,” said John Allen, Delmarva Power region vice president. “It is essential that all of us remain vigilant and be prepared for the possibility of severe winter weather. We want our customers to know that we are committed to an emergency response system that makes safety a priority, restores power as quickly and safely as possible and provides customers with information on how to prepare for and deal with weather-related outages. We’ll be prepared to add more personnel and resources as needed and work with local governments through our Emergency Services Partnership Program to activate emergency procedures,” he added.
Delmarva Power employees prepare for the possibility of storm-related power outages by regularly participating in emergency drills. In addition, the company maintains an adequate supply of essential equipment -- such as poles, wires and transformers -- and stays in contact with other utilities to quickly arrange for mutual assistance in case of a natural disaster.
“We also believe that preventive maintenance is essential in reducing the potential for service
interruptions caused by stormy weather,” Allen said. “We plan to invest several million dollars over the next few years to continue to upgrade our electric infrastructure and trim trees near power lines to help avoid outages that can be caused by trees and limbs that fall during storms.”
Delmarva Power suggests that customers assemble an emergency kit that can be used at home and, if necessary, take with them if they’re ordered to evacuate. Each kit should include a flashlight, battery-powered clock and radio, extra batteries, non-perishable food, manual can opener, bottled water and a list of important phone numbers. All items can be placed into a large cooler which is easy to grab if a person has to leave home quickly.

Allen was joined at today’s event by Brittany Fowler, regional communications officer for the American Red Cross of Delmarva. “As winter storm season approaches, we want to make sure families are prepared,” said Fowler. “We are encouraging everyone to get a kit, make a plan, and be informed before the threat of a storm so that they know how to stay safe and warm should one affect our area.”
