Entrepreneurs invited to attend VOLT Loan Informational Session

Worcester County Economic Development (WCED), in partnership with the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation and Maryland Capital Enterprises, invites business owners and entrepreneurs to attend a Video Lottery Terminal (VOLT) small business loan information session. The session will take place at the Ocean Pines Branch Library on October 2, 2015 from 10 a.m. to noon. 

Worcester County Recognizes Volunteers for Star Spirit

September 17, 2015, the Commissioners and Volunteer Services Manager Kelly Brinkley recognized seven individuals and four groups during the annual Volunteer Spirit of Worcester County Awards dinner ceremony at the Atlantic Hotel in Berlin. Volunteers were nominated by their peers in one of four star categories: youth, individual, faith-based and nonprofit volunteer program.

“These volunteers represent the countless hundreds of stars in our community stepping forward to volunteer to assure that vital community services and programs remain available to meet the needs of area residents and visitors,” Brinkley said. “It’s a huge honor to be able to shine the spotlight on them, even if it’s just for a moment to say thanks, and we appreciate the way you turn love into action to care for the community’s needs.”

Household Hazardous Waste & E-Cycling Collection Day on October 10

The Recycling Division of Worcester County Public Works, in conjunction with Maryland Environmental Services and the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), will conduct Household Hazardous Waste and E-Cycling (electronics recycling) Collection Day on Saturday, October 10, 2015, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Showell Elementary School parking lot.

Worcester County Health Department and Town of Snow Hill Partner to Sponsor Fun Walk

Snow Hill, MD- Fall into fitness this October and participate in the 3rd Annual Making Strides for Awareness Fun Walk to be held on Wednesday, October 7th at Byrd Park in Snow Hill, Market Street. This is a free event co-sponsored by the Worcester County Health Department and the Town of Snow Hill. The first 50 registrants will receive a HOPE water bottle.

Commissioners Announce New County Attorney

The Worcester County Commissioners named Maureen Lanigan Howarth as the new County Attorney. Howarth graduated cum laude from James Madison University, with a Business Bachelor of Arts in Accounting in 2004. She graduated cum laude from the University of Baltimore School of Law with a law degree in 2007, after which she served as a law clerk for Wicomico County Circuit Court Judge Donald C. Davis.

Howarth will step into her new role with Worcester County Government (WCG) on November 9, 2015. She brings eight years of legal experience in county government to WCG. She served as an assistant county attorney for Wicomico County Government from 2008 to 2012 when she took over as deputy county attorney.

Worcester County Economic Development Director Resigns Post

Former Worcester County Economic Development Director Bill Badger resigned his post with Worcester County Government (WCG) Tuesday, September 1, 2015. The Commissioners accepted Badger’s resignation and thanked him for his years of service to WCG. The Commissioners wish him the very best in all his future endeavors.

WCG will advertise to fill the position of Economic Development director in the near future.

Youth field hockey clinic offered in Berlin this fall

A Youth Field Hockey Clinic at the Northern Worcester Athletic Complex in Berlin this fall is open to participants in grades k-8. The clinic will run on Tuesdays, September 15 through October 20, from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.

The purpose of the clinic is to introduce the sport of field hockey in a non-competitive environment to area youth. Participants will learn basic skills and fundamentals through station drills and exercises. Children will learn to apply their skills to field hockey activities and modified games.

Delmarva Power Supports 2015 Coastal Cleanup

OCEAN CITY, Md.  – Delmarva Power will partner with environmental, governmental and business organizations throughout the region to support the 29th annual Coastal Cleanup this year. The effort aims to remove trash from beaches and riverbanks in Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey.

Men's Basketball League Returns for Fall Season

Men’s basketball returns to the Worcester County Recreation Center (WCRC) this fall, and registration is now open. Teams are invited to compete in this fast-paced league. Scores and standing will be kept, and the league will culminate with a playoff tournament that will determine the league champion.

Games will be played Thursdays, September 10 through November 19, from 7 - 10 p.m. at the WCRC, just off U.S. Rt. 113 in Snow Hill. The League is open to participants ages 18 and older.
