Pickleball comes to the Worcester County Recreation Center

            Worcester County Department of Recreation & Parks is excited to offer Pickleball for the first time this winter! This drop-in program will be played indoors at the Worcester County Recreation Center on a badminton-sized court and with a slightly modified tennis net.  

Christmas tree drop off sites

The Solid Waste Division of Worcester County will host its annual collection of Christmas trees through Jan. 15, 2016. Trees can be dropped off at the Central Landfill in Newark and the Berlin, Pocomoke and Snow Hill Homeowners Convenience Centers at no cost to area residents only. 
“Despite the future closing of the Berlin HOCC for yard waste on January 1,” we will still be providing containers at that site and the Pocomoke HOCC for Christmas Tree Recycling,” Public Works Director John Tustin said. “Citizens may bring their trees to the HOCC for disposal until Jan. 15.”

Yard Waste will not be accepted at Berlin Transfer Station beginning January 1

Yard waste will not be accepted at the Berlin Homeowner Convenience Center (HOCC) beginning January 1, 2016 through completion of a project to cap and close the rubblefill located at the site.

December 31, 2015 will be the last day homeowners are permitted to drop off yard waste at the Berlin HOCC. Starting Jan. 1, homeowners should take yard waste to the Central Landfill in Newark for disposal.

County honors service of former Commissioner Louise L. Gulyas

The Worcester County Commissioners and staff bid a fond farewell to our dear friend and former County Commissioner Louise L. Gulyas, who passed away Thursday morning, December 17, 2015.

Gulyas was elected as a County Commissioner to represent the Ocean City District - District Seven in 1998. She was the second woman ever to be elected as a County Commissioner, and she served four consecutive terms until retiring in 2014.

Holiday Schedule for Worcester County Government offices

Worcester County Government (WCG) offices will close at noon Thursday, December 24, 2015, in observance of the Christmas holiday and reopen Monday, Dec. 28. WCG offices will also be closed Friday, January 1, 2016 for New Year’s Day.

The Solid Waste Division of Public Works, both the Central Landfill in Newark and Homeowner Convenience Centers (HCCs), holiday hours of operation are as follows. Reminder, HCCs are closed Wednesdays.

·         HCCs and the Central Landfill will close at noon Dec. 24 and reopen Dec. 26

SALISBURY, Md. – Since the winter season is fast approaching, Delmarva Power and the American Red Cross of Delmarva held a joint news conference today in Salisbury, Md., to remind the public that it’s time to prepare for the possibility that harsh weather could hit the region any time over the next few months.

Delmarva Power Warns of Meter Reader Scams

WILMINGTON, Del. – Delmarva Power has been notified by law enforcement and its customers of persons posing as Delmarva Power meter readers.  Almost all of Delmarva Power’s electric meters are Smart Meters that can be read remotely.  However, the company still employees around a dozen meter readers throughout the service territory to read the minimal amount of traditional meters still in use as well as help to properly maintain the entire pool of Smart Meters.

Fifth VOLT Small Business Loan Awarded in Worcester County

Worcester County Economic Development (WCED) officials announce the award of a Video Lottery Terminal (VOLT) small business loan to Lisa Taylor, owner and creative director of Smart Graphics Design/Frugals, The Locals Source for Coupons.

“This is the first VOLT loan to be awarded in the southern end of the county,” WCED Director Merry Mears said. “We look forward to the additional job opportunities the expansion of her business will bring to Pocomoke City.”

Worcester County Honored for Excellence in Financial Reporting

December 1, 2015, Worcester County Government (WCG) was recently honored with an award and a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the seventh consecutive year by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada. The GFOA recognizes contributions to the practice of government finance that exemplify outstanding financial management, and WCG was honored with this recent recognition for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015.
