What is GIS?

About Us
Worcester County’s GIS is currently housed in the Department of Comprehensive Planning. The GIS began as a regional effort in May 1997 between the Worcester County Commissioners, Assateague Island National Seashore, Maryland Coastal Bays Program and Maryland Department of Natural Resources to support the activities of the regional GIS. In November 2004, Worcester County decided fulltime GIS support was needed to meet the growing demand of GIS in the county system. Today, GIS supports a wide variety of government functions including emergency services, water and sewer projects, comprehensive planning, watershed planning, development review proposals, public works projects, and more.
